HKUST MBA Application Guide

Academic requirements: A Bachelor’s degree from a recognized university. Soft copy of academic transcripts/graduation certificates will need to be uploaded online

• Applicants who earned their degree in Europe might need to submit a diploma supplement from their university. This supplement is an official document that accompanies a higher education diploma, detailing the qualification’s nature, content, and the results achieved.

GMAT/GRE score:

• Part-time MBA applicants with more than 7 years of full-time work experience are eligible to apply for a GMAT waiver, which is subject to approval
• HKUST doesn’t have a minimum score requirement, though for their full-time MBA program, the average GMAT score is 660 and average GRE score is 322

English language requirements:

• TOEFL/IELTS/Duolingo English Test (DET) results are required if English was not the medium of instruction in the applicant’s undergraduate/postgraduate program
• Minimum score requirements:
  • TOEFL – Internet-based Test (iBT): 80
  • TOEFL – Paper-based Test (pBT): 550
  • TOEFL – Revised Paper-delivered Test: 60 (total scores for Reading, Listening and Writing sections)
  • IELTS (Academic Module): Overall score: 6.5 and all sub-score: 5.5
  • DET: 125

Work experience: Minimum of 2 years’ full-time work experience. Applicants must submit a resume/CV. Here’s HKUST 1-page CV sample.

• HKUST will consider any full-time work experience up to July 1 of the year in which the student’s MBA will commence.

Applicants for the HKUST MBA program are required to provide two recommendation letters along with their application. References can be provided by individuals who have previously collaborated with applicants, offering the Admissions Committee valuable insights into their work history and personal attributes, including communication abilities, teamwork, leadership, and self-assurance. A referee should have a sufficient understanding of the applicants to accurately vouch for their work performance and personal qualities.

The application process for HKUST involves submitting two brief essays, along with the option to include an additional essay if desired.

• It is vital to demonstrate how your short-term and long-term objectives are not only connected but also realistic and attainable. After candidates submit their applications, the Admission Committee will evaluate all materials provided. Those who are selected for an interview will usually receive notification within 1-2 weeks after the deadline.

The HKUST MBA interview generally takes the form of a conversational panel discussion, often held online. Its purpose is to gauge the candidate’s interest, compatibility, and overall appropriateness for the program, rather than to conduct a strict interrogation. Candidates can anticipate discussing their professional experiences, career aspirations, motivations for applying to HKUST, and how the program corresponds with their goals.
