SMU MBA Application Guide

The SMU MBA program is on the lookout for candidates who exhibit intellectual strength and leadership skills, are eager to learn, and possess the personal attributes necessary to enhance the SMU MBA experience and the wider community:

• Exceptional leadership and professional experience: The SMU MBA program places a strong emphasis on professional achievements and proven leadership potential, aiming to prepare candidates to take on leadership roles in organizations after graduation. There is a strict requirement of at least 2 years of work experience, with participants typically having an average of 5 to 6 years in the workforce. Although younger candidates are welcome to apply, they must showcase remarkable leadership potential and maturity through their professional and personal journeys.
• Robust academic capability: Due to the demanding nature of the SMU MBA curriculum, candidates are expected to present strong academic qualifications, reflected in their previous academic records. The GMAT/GRE serves as a benchmark for evaluating applicants from various national, educational, and professional backgrounds. While there is no set minimum GMAT/GRE score for the SMU MBA program, candidates who achieve above-average scores in the verbal, quantitative, and writing sections will be viewed as more competitive. Additionally, TOEFL or IELTS scores are necessary for candidates whose undergraduate or graduate studies were not conducted in English.
• A proactive approach to social responsibility and contribution to the learning environment: The SMU MBA program aims to cultivate business leaders who possess a strong sense of social responsibility and are willing to actively contribute to the learning experience both within and beyond the classroom. Candidates with excellent interpersonal skills and a global perspective are likely to excel as leaders.

A good GMAT/GRE/SMU Admissions Test (SMUAT) score

• The SMUAT is a tool using verbal, numerical and abstract information to assess and measure applicants’ critical reasoning ability. The test is conducted online, and in the format of Multiple-Choice Questions. The test will cost S$125/attempt.
• SMU graduates with cumulative GPAs of 3.0/4.0 or better, and graduates from local Autonomous Universities (NUS, NTU, SUSS, SUTD, SIT) with cumulative GPAs of 3.5/5.0 or better will not require a GMAT/GRE/SMU Admissions Test score for admissions.

A valid TOEFL or IELTS score is necessary if the applicant’s undergraduate studies were not conducted in English.

Any remarkable professional achievements, leadership skills and potential, academic capabilities, and contributions to the community would provide a significant advantage.

Minimum post-degree work experience of 2 years. Applicants will be asked to submit their updated resume.

Applicants are required to provide two full sets of referee information while applying for the SMU MBA online. Once the application is submitted, the application portal will automatically email the selected referees and gather the recommendation forms on behalf of the applicant.

The SMU MBA requires applicants to complete two personal statements/essays:

Essay 1: Explain in 500-600 words your career and personal aspirations, and your motivation for pursuing the Master of Business Administration Programme.

• Begin by outlining your career aspirations, detailing the specific industry or role you aim to pursue. Discuss how your past experiences, whether academic or professional, have shaped these goals. Highlight any relevant skills or knowledge you possess that will aid you in achieving these aspirations and consider mentioning any role models or influences that have inspired your career path.
• Next, delve into your personal aspirations, reflecting on how they intertwine with your professional goals. This could include your desire for personal growth, work-life balance, or the impact you wish to have on your community or society at large. Share anecdotes or experiences that illustrate your values and how they motivate you to strive for success in both your career and personal life.

Essay 2: Discuss in 500-600 words one of the following topics:

1. Describe your greatest weakness and how you have tried to overcome it.
2. Describe your outstanding talents, skills and inherent abilities that are not reflected in your academic qualifications and records.
3. Describe the situation with the greatest ethical complexity that you have faced in your professional or academic life, and how your input helped resolve it.

• No matter which prompt you choose, you need to ensure that you clearly understand the prompt and its requirements. For instance, if you choose to discuss your greatest weakness, reflect on a specific challenge you have faced, detailing the circumstances surrounding it and the steps you have taken to address and improve upon this weakness. Use personal anecdotes to illustrate your journey and the lessons learned along the way.
• As you develop your essay, focus on creating a structured narrative that flows logically from one point to the next. Start with an engaging introduction that captures the reader’s attention, followed by body paragraphs that delve deeper into your chosen topic. For example, if you are highlighting your unique talents and skills, provide concrete examples of how these abilities have manifested in your life, even if they are not evident in your academic records. This will help paint a vivid picture of who you are beyond your grades.
• Conclude your essay with a strong closing statement that reinforces the main theme of your discussion. Whether you are reflecting on personal growth, showcasing your talents, or navigating ethical dilemmas, ensure that your conclusion ties back to your initial points and leaves the reader with a lasting impression. Aim for clarity and authenticity in your writing, allowing your personality and voice to shine through while adhering to the 500-600 word limit.

Shortlisted candidates can expect to receive an invitation for an online interview within two weeks following their application submission.

In line with the practices of many leading business schools in Asia, the interview at SMU for the MBA program is conducted by a panel. Typically, this panel comprises two to three faculty members who bring diverse perspectives and expertise to the evaluation process. The interview usually lasts between 25 to 30 minutes, although it may occasionally extend to 35 or 40 minutes, depending on the depth of the discussion and the questions posed.

During the interview, candidates can anticipate a range of questions that delve into their career aspirations, the motivations behind their decision to pursue an MBA, and the specific reasons for choosing SMU and Singapore as their preferred destination for advanced education.
