Cambridge MBA Application Process

A. Evaluation Criteria

The Cambridge MBA program is looking for candidates with:

  • A learning mindset: The ability to adapt to new situations and learn quickly is crucial for success in the MBA program
  • Resilience and ability to thrive under pressure: The Cambridge MBA is a demanding program, and candidates should demonstrate the capacity to handle stress and challenges effectively
  • Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills: The program emphasizes teamwork and collaboration, so candidates should be able to work effectively with others
  • A global outlook and ability to contribute to a diverse community: The Cambridge MBA has a strong international focus, and candidates should be open to learning from people with diverse backgrounds and perspectives

B. Education And Work Experience

Undergraduate degree and transcripts:

  • Cambridge expects applicants to hold a strong 2:1 Honours degree according to the UK grading system or an equivalent international qualification. While lower grades may be taken into account, candidates must present a solid GMAT or GRE score. Although details of a Master’s degree can be submitted, they are not mandatory
  • Candidates should upload their degree certificate and transcripts in the ‘Academic Information’ section
  • In exceptional cases, Cambridge may consider applicants who do not possess a degree. However, these candidates must provide proof of their academic capabilities to meet the program’s intellectual challenges, such as a competitive GMAT score and robust references from instructors in other academic programs

GMAT/GRE test score:

  • GMAT, GMAT Focus Edition, and GRE are accepted
  • It should be noted that the Cambridge MBA’s GMAT mean average is 680-690 (625-635 for GMAT Focus Edition), and its GRE mean average if 78% for Verbal and 71% for Quantitative sections

English language requirements:

  • Cambridge accepts IELTS (Academic) and TOEFL iBT test scores
    • IELTS: Minimum band 7.0, with at least 7.0 for Listening, Writing, Speaking, and 6.5 for Reading
    • TOEFL: Minimum 100 with at least 25 across all components
  • Cambridge provides a comprehensive English Language policy here

Work experience: Candidates must have a minimum of 2 years’ experience by the start of the MBA program. The Cambridge MBA class average is around 6 years of experience

C. Reference

Candidates are required to provide one reference from a supervisor. Cambridge does not accept references from academic sources, relatives, peers, or colleagues. The reference must be from someone who has held a supervisory or managerial position in relation to the candidate. If the candidate is self-employed, they may request a customer, supplier, or professional advisor to serve as their referee.

It is advisable for candidates to select their referee early and initiate the process to avoid delays in their application due to late reference submissions. Once candidates input their referee’s contact information into Cambridge’s online application system, an automatic request for the reference will be sent to them.

Cambridge MBA Application Guide

D. Essays

Candidates must complete the careers objectives statement and three short essays.

Career objectives statement: Please provide details of your post-MBA career plans. The statement should not exceed 500 words and must address the following:

  • What are your short and long-term career objectives? How will the Cambridge MBA equip you to achieve these?
  • Looking at your short-term career goal, describe the research you have done to understand how this industry/role/location recruits MBA talent and what they are looking for in a candidate?
  • How confident do you feel about meeting your short-term career goal? What skills/characteristics do you already have that will help you to achieve them, and what preparation are you doing now?

The school aims to assess your career goals alongside your readiness and confidence in achieving them. Consider how a business degree from Cambridge Judge will enhance your objectives and reflect on past actions and future plans that will help you gain the skills and connections needed to reach your aspirations. Mention specific resources at Cambridge that align with your growth areas to show you’ve thoughtfully considered how the program fits your needs.

The Admissions Committee is seeking proof that you understand the importance of being proactive in your success. They want to see that you are taking initiative rather than relying solely on the program’s reputation. Share relevant experiences, such as job shadowing or industry research, to demonstrate your commitment to preparation and learning.

It’s crucial to express your passion and determination as you pursue the MBA program. The committee appreciates candidates who approach their goals with confidence and enthusiasm. Clearly communicate that you are dedicated to achieving your professional ambitions and are prepared to put in the necessary effort to succeed.

Essay 1: Tell us about a time when you made a professional mistake. How could it have ended differently? (up to 200 words)

  • This essay should quickly establish your narrative, detailing how you faced a professional challenge and the personal growth that followed. With limited word count, clearly identify the mistake—avoid framing it as a hidden strength—in just a few sentences. Take full responsibility, as the Admissions Committee values accountability over excuses
  • Instead of blaming external factors, reflect on your skills and decisions. If you corrected your mistake, explain how a different approach helped. If not, consider how you could have acted differently to avoid the error. If space allows, conclude by sharing how you applied the lessons learned in a later project

Essay 2: Tell us about the best team you worked with. What made the team successful? (up to 200 words)

  • It’s important to remember that “best” doesn’t necessarily equate to “most successful” or “easiest.” Often, people gain the most valuable lessons from challenging situations rather than those that unfold without a hitch
  • While you can certainly share a positive team experience if it resonates with you, take a moment to reflect on all your teamwork encounters—both as a leader and a member. You may find that a seemingly difficult experience was actually the most enriching, leading to a more compelling and memorable essay for admissions team. To create a compelling essay, narrate your collaborative experiences, highlighting your contributions and the strengths others brought to the group dynamic, while keeping it concise

Essay 3: Provide an example of when someone else positively impacted your life. What did you learn from this experience? (up to 200 words)

  • Cambridge presents four essay prompts to candidates, with three focusing on insights gained from life experiences. The institution is clearly interested in individuals who learn through active engagement with their surroundings rather than solely through traditional classroom instruction
  • This person could be anyone from a mentor or friend to a teacher, family member, or even a stranger; their status is irrelevant. The Admissions Committee aims to understand your character, the key influences in your life, and your core values, emphasizing the importance of the meaningful and lasting impact of your relationship with the chosen individual. Consider what you learned from this experience and how it has positively shaped your life
  • While the prompt suggests that you might focus on a brief encounter, it’s important to remember that the depth of the impact is what truly matters. A single, powerful interaction can resonate more with an admissions reader than a lengthy narrative, so consider highlighting a short-term experience that left a lasting impression

E. Interviews

Once the online application is fully submitted, Cambridge will inform applicants within three weeks whether they have been selected for an interview. This interview can take place either in person at the school or through a virtual platform.

For the Cambridge MBA program, interviews are non-blind, meaning the interviewer will have reviewed the applicant’s essays and CV, but will not have access to their exam scores. Candidates should be ready to discuss their submitted materials and should also prepare a few additional examples that were not included in the application for potential follow-up questions.

The interview usually lasts about 30 minutes and is conducted by alumni of the program.

Cost of Attendance and Financial Aids

The tuition for the MBA Class of 2025/26 is set at £74,000. Beyond this fee, students should also budget for living expenses and housing. For the academic year 2025/26, Cambridge projects that a full-time student without dependents will require approximately £19,020 for basic living costs.

Additional potential expenses include the purchase of a laptop, mobile phone, bicycle, as well as travel and utility bills.

Admitted students have various options to finance their Cambridge Judge MBA, including scholarships offered by the school, merit-based bursaries, and external funding sources.
