This could include a former manager or supervisor, or anyone who has overseen the candidate in a professional or extracurricular context.
HEC Paris uses the GMAC Common Letter of Recommendation format to frame its recommendation questions.

D. Essays
HEC Paris asks for five distinct essays, enabling candidates to thoroughly showcase their identities and express their enthusiasm for the MBA program at the institution.
Essay 1: Why are you applying to the HEC MBA Program now? What is the professional objective that will guide your career choice after your MBA, and how will the HEC MBA contribute to the achievement of this objective? (3,500 characters)
- This essay on career aspirations invites candidates to articulate why enrolling in business school is a sensible progression at this point in their careers, outline their goals after obtaining an MBA, and explain how an MBA from HEC Paris will aid in achieving their professional milestones
- To tailor your essay for HEC effectively, consider addressing each question in order to maintain a coherent narrative. Reference your current job experience and specify the career path you intend to pursue, whether it involves a particular industry or a functional shift, while justifying the importance of an MBA for your growth
- Without context, goals can be difficult to interpret and may even appear uninspiring. Providing some background will help bring these ambitions to life and make them more engaging
- It’s crucial to explain the timing of your application; whether you feel you’ve reached a learning plateau in your current position or are ready to embrace a new opportunity, clarify why this is the ideal moment for you to pursue business school. This part should also highlight the skills and knowledge you wish to gain through the MBA, connecting them to your future goals
Essay 2: What do you consider your most significant life achievement? (2,000 characters)
- It’s essential to choose a noteworthy accomplishment to highlight, preferably one that positively influenced an individual, group, or organisation, as this demonstrates your commitment to making a difference for others
- Be sure to discuss not just the outcomes, but also the strategies and thought processes that led to your success
- If space allows, consider sharing how this achievement has personally affected you, adding depth to your narrative
- Remember, the prompt is not confined to your professional experiences, so feel free to draw from your extracurricular activities when selecting a topic for your response
- As you wrap up your essay, delve deeper than just the results; articulate why this experience is significant in your life, whether it sparked a new passion or transformed your perspective
Essay 3: Leadership and ethics are inevitably intertwined in the business world. Describe a situation in which you have dealt with these issues and how they have influenced you. (2,000 characters)
- Business schools now not only teach ethical practices but also assess applicants’ moral judgment during admissions to avoid future breaches. HEC Paris aims to evaluate your decision-making skills through this essay
- Even if applicants hold junior roles with limited influence, the school wants to see your ability to recognise ethical dilemmas. Clearly articulate the choices you faced and how you approached the situation, emphasising the compelling reasons for each option to showcase the complexity of your decision
- You don’t need to be the final decision-maker; what matters is your ability to analyse the situation and express your viewpoint. After explaining your response, reflect on how this experience has influenced your perspective, whether by implementing new processes or shaping your overall worldview
Essay 4: Imagine a life entirely different from the one you now lead, what would it be? (2,000 characters)
- The Admissions Committee aims to learn more about you as an individual through this essay. You’re not required to focus on business topics; just ensure that your chosen subject aligns with the personal brand you’ve created in other parts of your application
- While discussing an alternative career path is a valid approach, feel free to weave in personal elements as well. You might reflect on hobbies you wish could become your profession, consider the community impact you aspire to make, or explore a career choice you didn’t pursue after college
Essay 5: Please choose from one of the following essays (2,000 characters):
- What monument or site would you advise a first-time visitor to your country or city to discover, and why?
- Certain books, movies or plays have had an international success that you believe to be undeserved. Choose an example and analyse it.
- What figure do you most admire and why? You may choose from any field (arts, literature, politics, business, etc)
- Since all options are equally appealing, select the one that resonates with you the most, ensuring you have a story or perspective to share in your response.
- If you opt for option A, consider what aspects of your country you would like to showcase. For instance, if cooking is your passion, you might highlight a visit to a renowned market to illustrate your enthusiasm and share your country’s culinary heritage.
- Option B appears to be the most challenging, as making a case for a negative can be precarious. Therefore, think carefully about how to frame your response positively. Stay true to yourself in your selection and include a concise summary of the plot, along with a well-reasoned argument that not only backs up your claims but also uncovers a unique aspect of your personality that the Admissions Committee hasn’t encountered in other parts of your application
- If option C appeals to you, carefully select a person you admire, focusing on their leadership qualities rather than personal traits, and relate their attributes to your own experiences and aspirations
Mini Goals Essay: Please describe your immediate career goals following your MBA including location. (1,400 characters)
- For this essay, ensure that you either replicate the goals statement from Essay 1 and supplement it with any relevant details, such as location, if they were not covered previously. If your goals were not clearly articulated in Essay 1, make sure to provide that information here. While the prompt specifically requests your short-term goals, you might also consider discussing your long-term career aspirations to illustrate how your post-MBA plans connect to your overall career objectives
Optional Essay: Is there any additional information you would like to share with us? (6,300 characters max)
- While it might be tempting to use this brief application section to include extra stories and details that didn’t fit in other parts, it’s important to exercise restraint. Concentrate on addressing any gaps in your application, but feel free to use these explanations to showcase relevant accomplishments as well
- This space is also reserved for sharing information that you think will benefit your candidacy in applying for HEC Paris’ Excellence and Diversity scholarship
E. Interviews
Upon receiving the completed application, HEC Paris Admissions Board will convene for a Pre-Selection Jury to thoroughly review it. During this meeting, they will assess all formal elements of the application, including the candidate’s educational history, professional experience, international exposure, essays, and recommendation letters. It’s essential that the application demonstrates the candidate’s motivation to succeed and provides clear justification for their interest in the HEC Paris MBA. These factors will influence HEC Paris’ decision on who will be invited for interviews.
If candidates successfully navigate the Pre-Selection Jury, they will be invited to participate in two separate interviews. These interviews are conducted by alumni from the HEC Paris MBA program, who possess a deep understanding of what constitutes a strong MBA candidate and the qualities necessary for success in HEC Paris curriculum.
These interviews serve as an excellent opportunity for the school to evaluate the candidate’s communication abilities, leadership potential, aspirations, and core values. They also allow HEC Paris to gain insight into the candidate’s overall character, ensuring that they will not only adapt but also flourish within the program. Each interview carries equal significance, featuring a 10-minute oral presentation on a topic chosen by the candidate themselves, followed by a thorough discussion about their application. Please note that the interviews will be conducted in English.
Typically, these interviews are scheduled during the two weeks leading up to the final Admissions Jury, so it’s important that candidates are available during that timeframe.
