INSEAD MBA Application Process

A. Evaluation Criteria

INSEAD places a strong emphasis on four essential competencies that are crucial for success in its programs:

  • The ability to contribute: Involves not only sharing knowledge and insights but also actively participating in discussions and collaborative projects that enhance the learning experience for everyone involved.
  • Academic capacity: This reflects a candidate’s capacity to grasp complex concepts and excel in rigorous academic environments.
  • International motivation: INSEAD seeks individuals who are eager to embrace diverse cultures and perspectives, fostering a global mindset that is essential in today’s interconnected world.
  • Leadership potential: This highlights an individual’s ability to inspire and guide others, driving positive change within organizations and communities.

Together, these competencies form the foundation of a well-rounded candidate who is prepared to thrive in a dynamic and global business landscape.

B. Education

Transcripts

  • Transcripts must display both the diploma and grades obtained from every college or university attended by the candidates. INSEAD accepts transcripts in either English or French; any other language must be accompanied by a certified English translation
  • Each transcript should include the official seal and signature of the issuing institution
  • Applicants can upload scanned copies of their transcripts with the application form or send them directly to INSEAD by mail, either by themselves or through the academic institution. It is essential that transcripts arrive at the Admissions Office by the specified deadline
  • If candidates are accepted, they will need to submit their original transcripts and degree to the Admissions Office. Only officially certified photocopies from a recognized public or professional entity (such as a solicitor, embassy, or town hall) will be accepted

GMAT/GRE scores

  • Unofficial score report can be uploaded for evaluation
  • INSEAD recommends a 60th percentile on the Verbal component (80), and a 66th percentile on the Quantitative (80) and Data Insights components (77)
  • For the GRE, both in the original and shortened version, INSEAD recommends 80% or above in the verbal and quantitative sections

English language certification

  • Required if the applicant’s native language is not English
  • TOEFL, IELTS, and PTE scores are accepted
  • Alternatively, applicants can also demonstrate fluency in English through:
    • A University degree taught in English, as stated in the official transcripts OR
    • A one-year academic exchange during which the curriculum was fully taught in English

Language requirement: Candidates must be fluent in English AND have at least a B1 “Practical” level of knowledge in a second language

  • Not applicable to candidates whose native language is not English

C. Letters of Recommendation

The INSEAD MBA program requires two letters of recommendation in English. One of these should ideally come from the applicant’s current workplace, with the supervisor or manager being a preferred choice. The second recommendation should be from someone who has assessed the candidate in a professional context, such as a client, a previous supervisor, or a colleague involved in community service or extracurricular activities.

While academic recommendations are permitted, they may not fully align with INSEAD’s focus on evaluating a candidate’s ability to collaborate and lead others, as well as their potential for senior management roles. Candidates have the option to include a third letter of recommendation if they believe it would enhance their application.

It’s important for recommenders to know that they can submit their letters online to INSEAD at their convenience, as long as it is before the application deadline.

D. Curriculum Vitae

This curriculum vitae can either be free format or follow the format of the INSEAD official CV e-book. The resume can be uploaded in the Supporting Documents of the application.

E. Job Questions, Activities & Interests Essay, and Motivation Essays

Job questions are not meant to be essays, so the word count isn’t a major concern. Applicants should feel at ease writing anywhere from three lines to twenty. For those employed at well-known companies, a brief three-line description may suffice, while individuals from smaller firms might find it beneficial to provide a more comprehensive overview.

Job Question 1: Provide a summary of your career since graduating from university, explaining the rationale behind your key decisions and career progression. Include a description of your current (or most recent) role, covering the scope of your work, major responsibilities, employees under your supervision, budget size, clients/products, and any notable results achieved. (500 words, maximum)

  • INSEAD has combined two short answer job questions into one, aiming for candidates to present a cohesive career narrative that highlights consistent upward progression. Focus on detailing each full-time position, the reasons for career moves, and changes in responsibilities, while also mentioning lessons learned and skills gained
  • Provide a clear overview of your current or most recent role, as this will be the Admissions committee’s first impression. Context about your position within the company and your daily responsibilities is crucial. Concentrate on general insights about your current role, saving in-depth accounts of significant career moments for later questions

Job Question 2: Describe your short and long-term career aspirations, including your target geography, industry, and function. How do you plan to bridge the gap between your current position and these goals, and how will INSEAD help you achieve them? (300 words, maximum)

  • Clearly define your immediate post-MBA goals, specifying the industry, role, and target companies or regions. For example, instead of saying “consulting,” mention “strategy consulting in Southeast Asia with BCG or Bain, focusing on digital transformation.”
  • Outline your long-term career vision, detailing where you see yourself in 10 to 15 years, the leadership role you aspire to, and the contributions you wish to make in your field or community, ensuring alignment with your personal interests
  • Identify the gap between your current skills and your future aspirations, pinpointing specific areas for development such as leadership, international business exposure, strategic thinking, or industry expertise
  • Explain how INSEAD will help you bridge that gap, highlighting relevant program elements like specific courses, the global alumni network, tailored career services, and the diverse classroom environment, showcasing your MBA pursuit as a strategic plan

Activities & Interests Essay: Describe the activities you listed above [in the INSEAD application form] and explain how they have enriched your life (e.g., skills developed, personal growth, community impact) (300 words, maximum)

  • This essay provides insight into what candidates offer to INSEAD beyond their academic and professional records, highlighting the importance of personal passions and pursuits in shaping their contributions to the school community. INSEAD seeks individuals eager to immerse themselves in student life, participate in clubs, and enhance the program’s collaborative environment
  • Select 2-3 impactful activities from your experiences that showcase your community engagement, creative or athletic interests, or leadership roles in volunteer efforts. Instead of merely listing these activities, delve into how they have influenced your growth and the difference you’ve made through them. Choose experiences that showcase your unique qualities and allow the admissions team to envision the type of classmate and contributor you will be at INSEAD

Motivation Essay 1: Give a candid description of yourself as a person and a leader, emphasizing the strengths and weaknesses you recognize in yourself. Explain how you are actively working on your development, sharing key experiences that have shaped you, providing specific examples where relevant. (500 words maximum)

  • This question invites applicants to present themselves to the Admissions Committee, encouraging a deeper exploration of their personality and leadership qualities beyond just their job and hobbies. Candidates should also share significant past experiences that have influenced their development, making full use of the 500-word limit for their response
  • When crafting your essay, it’s crucial to thoroughly address the prompt while emphasizing your positive attributes. Think of it as introducing yourself to a new friend or on a first date: while it’s good to acknowledge any weaknesses, the focus should be on highlighting your strengths and the reasons someone would want to connect with you
  • Start by showcasing two or three of your best qualities, supported by specific examples that demonstrate how these traits have led to your achievements or enabled you to assist others. Illustrate your character with concrete instances, allowing the reader to see how your values and personality shape your actions and potential contributions to the INSEAD MBA program. After detailing your strengths, briefly mention one or two weaknesses that you are actively working to improve
  • Candidates can also reflect on the influences that have shaped their personal growth, integrating these insights into their exploration of personal traits or highlighting them in the introduction or conclusion if they reveal overarching themes. INSEAD’s framework offers applicants the flexibility to choose topics from personal, professional, or extracurricular areas, and it is recommended that candidates select examples that present a comprehensive view of their leadership skills and experiences

Motivation Essay 2: Describe a highly stressful situation you faced and how you managed it. What did this experience teach you about yourself and your interactions with others? (400 words maximum)

  • This essay introduces a new prompt that replaces INSEAD’s earlier “failure” question, marking a significant shift in emphasis. Instead of focusing on success or failure, it highlights the importance of resilience, emotional intelligence, and leadership in challenging situations—qualities essential for thriving in INSEAD’s dynamic program and complex global contexts
  • To effectively address this question, select a significant high-pressure situation from your professional, personal, or extracurricular life that tested your leadership and adaptability. Detail your approach to managing the challenge, emphasizing your problem-solving skills and emotional management. Be honest about your experiences, showcasing humility and reflecting on both your successes and areas for improvement
  • Discuss your interactions with others, highlighting teamwork and communication, and conclude with insights on your personal growth and how the experience has influenced your approach to future challenges
  • Select a narrative that showcases distinct tension and resolution—admissions are interested in understanding your behaviour under pressure and how you grow through challenges. A compelling response will reveal not only your abilities but also your character

Optional Essay: Is there anything else that was not covered in your application that you would like to share with the Admissions Committee? (300 words, maximum)

  • This essay is optional and generally unnecessary for most applicants. Consider it a chance to discuss important topics that don’t fit into other sections, rather than a place to add extra content from your other essays.
  • Use this section if you need to clarify any gaps or issues in your background, such as a gap in employment or a lower GMAT or GPA. A concise explanation can help alleviate any concerns the Admissions Committee may have
  • It’s preferable to omit it rather than include irrelevant information that doesn’t enhance your application. Keeping your submission focused and succinct will be appreciated by the admissions reader
INSEAD MBA Application Guide

F. Admissions Video Interview

Soon after submitting the online application for the INSEAD MBA program, candidates will receive an email from Kira Talent containing a personalized link to participate in four video interviews. The questions posed will differ for each applicant.

This is a valuable chance for candidates to express their passions, motivations, and true selves. The MBA Admissions Committee aims to gain an authentic insight into each applicant, assessing their ability to think on their feet and articulate their ideas effectively.

It’s important to note that these video interviews do not replace in-person interviews with Alumni. Candidates must complete the video interviews within 48 hours following the application deadline.

To ace these video interview, Prep Zone recommends the following:

  • Candidates must have a reliable internet connection, a desktop or laptop computer, along with a camera and microphone. Please note that mobile devices, smartphones, and tablets are not compatible. Test the camera and microphone beforehand, then candidates should focus on the camera as if they are engaging directly with the Admissions Committee
  • Keep a notebook handy to jot down important points; candidates will have 45 seconds to prepare each response and 60 seconds to present it to the Admissions Committee
  • Candidates can practice as much as they like. Familiarity with the platform can enhance candidates’ ability to deliver sincere and genuine responses. Practice answers will not be shared with the Admissions Committee
  • INSEAD recommends business or business casual attire, though Admissions Committee will not evaluate candidates based on their appearance or background
  • Practicing can help reduce anxiety but don’t over-prepare. Authentic responses with personal examples will better showcase one’s motivations and interests
  • The INSEAD community values global diversity and different viewpoints, so candidates shouldn’t hesitate to let their personality shine through in their responses

G. Interviews with Alumni

Candidates will be notified about their interview selection roughly six weeks after INSEAD receives their completed application.

The interviews at INSEAD are typically conducted by alumni of the school, creating a more approachable atmosphere compared to those led by the Admissions Committee. However, the interviewer still aims to assess the strength of the candidate’s motivations for pursuing an MBA, their genuine interest in the INSEAD program, and their compatibility with the program’s diverse global community.

Interviewers frequently pose a variety of common MBA interview questions, along with inquiries aimed at evaluating how candidates manage diversity and conflict. Additionally, candidates should be prepared for follow-up questions.

INSEAD is updating its MBA program to reflect global changes, resulting in a new interview style. Candidates should stay informed about these trends for better preparation.

  • There is a stronger emphasis on global leadership and diversity, with alumni interviewers asking about experiences in multicultural teams and managing cultural differences. Be ready to discuss your success in diverse settings and how you can contribute to INSEAD’s inclusive community
  • Recent global events have led interviewers to explore candidates’ resilience and adaptability. Prepare for questions about overcoming challenges and demonstrating perseverance in your career
  • With a growing focus on social responsibility, INSEAD values ethical leadership more than ever. Be ready to talk about your community involvement and how you plan to use your MBA for positive societal impact, along with the core values that shape your leadership
  • As global uncertainties rise, interviewers may inquire about your crisis management abilities. Be prepared to provide examples of how you’ve guided teams through tough situations while keeping morale high
