Columbia Business School offers students the option to start their studies in either August or January. However, only those who begin in August have the opportunity to pursue a summer internship.
Students entering in January, known as J-Term students, will finish their first-term courses in the spring and then tackle their second-term coursework during the summer months.
For those applying to the Columbia Business School MBA Program, there is a nonrefundable application fee of $250, which is waived for participants in the Deferred Enrolment Program.

Students who prefer not to pursue a summer internship might think about starting their MBA studies in January, allowing them to finish their second semester during the summer months. This January start can be particularly beneficial for those looking to stay in their current industry post-graduation or explore entrepreneurial ventures. Approximately 30% of the Columbia MBA students begin their studies in January.

Through your resume and recommendation, we have a clear sense of your professional path to date. What are your career goals over the next three to five years and what is your long-term dream job? (500 words)
- Applicants should go beyond simply repeating what’s on their resume and recommendation letters. They should use the application as a foundation to elaborate on their career aspirations and ultimate job ambitions. It’s important to emphasize how their past work experiences and acquired skills will support their journey after completing their MBA
- One of the key evaluation criteria for the Columbia University MBA program is being an “Impact Maker.” Therefore, applicants should pay special attention to the “dream job” aspect of the prompt. It’s essential that their long-term goals not only advance their personal careers but also contribute positively to the community they are part of and the broader world around them
Essay 2:

- For January-Entry:

Applicants can choose between the January-Entry prompt or this prompt: Alternatively, please share a specific example of how you made a team more collaborative or fostered a greater sense of community within an organization.

- This section invites applicants to express their vision for contributing to the Columbia University MBA community and enriching the experiences of their fellow students
- As the prompt suggests, applicants are encouraged to be specific and steer clear of vague statements. - Thorough research is essential: delve into the school’s curriculum, extracurricular offerings, and unique programs. This can be accomplished by exploring the resources available on the Columbia Business School website or by connecting with Columbia MBA alumni and current students
Optional Essay:

- Any relevant information not addressed in the application should be included in this section
Reapplicant Essay:
How have you enhanced your candidacy since your previous application? Please detail your progress since you last applied and reiterate how you plan to achieve your immediate and long term post-MBA professional goals. (Maximum 500 words).
- In addition to the Reapplicant Essay, candidates should also follow Columbia MBA’s Reapplicant Checklist to ensure their applications are valid and completed.
E. Recommendation
For those applying to Columbia Business School for the first time, the school simplifies the process by asking for just one recommendation, unlike many other institutions that typically request two. Reapplicants are required to submit one new recommendation.
The recommendation should come from a current supervisor if applicants have been working full-time for at least 6 months. For work experience less than 6 months, applicants can ask for a recommendation from someone who can comment on their managerial abilities.
The Columbia MBA programme asks the recommender to consider the following guidelines when writing their recommendation (recommended limit – 1000 words):
- How do the candidate’s performance, potential, background, or personal qualities compare to those of other well-qualified individuals in similar roles? Please provide specific examples.
- Please describe the most important piece of constructive feedback you have given the applicant. Please detail the circumstances and the applicant’s response.
Some tips from the Columbia MBA Committee:
- Applicants should not participate in the drafting of the recommendation
- Contact information for recommenders should be their institutional or professional email address. Recommenders should use their letterhead whenever possible
It’s essential for applicants to choose their recommender wisely, particularly since Columbia MBA only asks for a single recommendation. Opt for someone who not only supports the applicant but can also provide specific insights into their performance through their firsthand experience working with the applicant.
F. Interviews
Interviews are by invitation only and cannot be requested. The Admissions Office will contact the applicants if they are selected for an interview.
During the interview, expect questions that focus on sharing your personal journey, as well as your short-term and long-term career objectives, along with other ambitions. It’s essential for applicants to be thoroughly familiar with every aspect of their application and to rehearse their responses until they feel at ease and self-assured. Here are some questions to ponder:
- Tell me about yourself, or walk me through your resume
- Why an MBA, now specifically?
- What are your career goals?
- Why this MBA? Why Columbia?
- How would you contribute to Columbia Business School?
- Tell me about a time you led a project you’re proud of.
- Tell me about a time you disagreed with a coworker/teammate.
- What do you like and dislike about your current job?
G. Deposits
Students who have been accepted are required to pay two nonrefundable tuition deposits to confirm their enrollment in the class, except for August Round 3, which only requires one deposit by the deadline. These deposits will be credited directly to the tuition and fees for the first semester. Please note that if students choose not to enrol, the deposit will not be returned.
