Duke MBA Application Guide

Finding the right fit is crucial for both the school and the applicant. Duke MBA adopts a comprehensive approach when evaluating each candidate. The various elements of the application allow applicants to showcase their strengths and alignment with Duke’s values. A candidate is deemed a strong applicant if they meet the following criteria:

• Duke MBA is assured of the applicant’s potential for success in the program
• The candidate is expected to contribute positively to their peers and to Duke MBA through their professional, personal, and academic journeys
• The candidate values diversity in perspectives and backgrounds within their community
• The candidate exhibits competence, character, and purpose, showing the greatest potential to be a leader who drives positive change

Transcripts: Legible, scanned copies of all unofficial transcripts are required for each college or university applicants have attended where they:

• earned (or will earn) a degree;
• studied for one semester or more;
• earned 12 or more credits (note: 4 or more credits if your university awards 1 credit for the typical class instead of 3 credits);
• and/or took a class that relates to your graduate study interests.

Standardised test scores: Duke MBA accepts GMAT, GMAT Focus, GRE, and Executive Assessment (EA) scores

• No minimum test score requirement
• Duke MBA will accept scores up to 5 years old
• The Daytime MBA program is known for its challenging and dynamic academic atmosphere, which necessitates robust quantitative and analytical abilities. As a result, the Admissions Committee places significant emphasis on the quantitative portion of test scores to confirm that applicants can successfully navigate the program’s demands.

Duke MBA doesn’t require English proficiency test scores. The applicant’s language proficiency will be assessed through other aspects of the application

Duke Fuqua MBA mandates the submission of a one-page business resume through the online application platform. When detailing employment and volunteer experiences, be sure to list the location, job title, dates, and key responsibilities, beginning with the most recent role. In the education section, include the dates attended and the degrees earned.

This resume can include:

• Full-time employment
• Volunteer work
• Internships
• Part-time work experience
• Education

The applicant’s previous work experience will provide Duke MBA with insights into their growth in leadership and teamwork abilities, as well as their personal and professional maturity.

• This program does not have a minimum work experience requirement
• All post-undergraduate work experience will be considered
• Throughout this application, the candidate should be able to show Duke MBA how their previous experiences will contribute to the Duke MBA learning environment

The Duke Fuqua MBA program asks applicants to share their insights through one short answer and two extended essay questions. Additionally, there is an option to include an extra essay. Please ensure that your responses are formatted with 1.5-line spacing and a font size of at least 10-point.

Short answer question:

What are your post-MBA career goals? Share with us your first-choice career plan and your alternate plan. (100 words maximum)

• This essay invites you to articulate your career vision, encouraging you to think broadly about your professional journey. Consider how your MBA and previous experiences will shape your career aspirations, while recognising that this is not a binding commitment to a specific direction
• The Duke MBA admissions team is interested in both your primary and alternative career options. Reflect on goals that align with your background and personality, and be prepared to discuss alternative paths if your initial plan doesn’t come to fruition. Emphasising adaptability is crucial in today’s dynamic environment and is particularly relevant for this essay
• For instance, if your primary goal is to work at a strategy consulting firm post-graduation, consider a backup plan like co-founding a startup if that opportunity doesn’t arise. Ensure that your goals are realistic and coherent, as presenting vastly different career paths may raise concerns about your focus
• Given the limited space in your essay, clearly articulate your plans and support them with insights from your resume, recommendations, and other application materials, highlighting how Duke Fuqua MBA is the perfect fit for your career development

Essay 1:

25 random things about yourself (750 words maximum, numbered list form)

The ‘Team Fuqua’ spirit and community is one of the things that sets the MBA experience apart, and it is a concept that extends beyond the student body to include faculty, staff, and administration. Please share with us “25 Random Things” about you. The Admissions Committee wants to get to know YOU – beyond the professional and academic achievements listed in your resume and transcript. Share with us important life experiences, your hobbies, achievements, fun facts, or anything that helps us understand what makes you who you are.

• This prompt invites candidates to reveal distinctive elements of their lives that might not be covered elsewhere, while also evaluating their creativity and capacity to share varied personal experiences
• Although generating 25 random facts may initially feel daunting, you can ignite your creativity by teaming up with friends and family to pinpoint what sets you apart and recount memorable anecdotes. Always have a notebook ready to jot down ideas as they arise

Our students enjoy a wide range of student-led organizations that provide opportunities for leadership development and personal fulfillment, as well as an outlet for contributing to society. Our student-led government, clubs, centers, and events are an integral part of the student culture and to the development of leaders. Based on your understanding of the Fuqua culture, what are 3 ways you expect to contribute at Fuqua?

• For many years, Duke Fuqua has emphasised the importance of student culture in its MBA application process, and this year’s essay question continues that tradition. Applicants should reflect on aspects of the student culture that resonate with them and consider how their past experiences and achievements align with these elements. Including one or two examples that showcase their skills and potential for making a positive impact is essential
• The response should centre on your three planned activities and contributions as a Daytime MBA student, highlighting your engagement in student-led initiatives. Detail your involvement in student organisations and potential leadership positions
• While personal development is significant, you need to express the impact you wish to achieve during their two years at Duke Fuqua MBA. This requires an awareness of the community’s needs and opportunities, which can be informed by discussions with current students and alumni to craft a persuasive essay
• To effectively convey your ideas in this essay, it’s essential to have a thorough understanding of the school. If your engagement and contribution plans do not align with the school’s offerings or core values, it may negatively affect your admission chances
• The prompt emphasises “student-led government, clubs, centers, and events,” so focusing your research in these areas is advisable to uncover opportunities that match your skills and experiences

Optional essay: Tell us more (500 words maximum)

If you feel there are circumstances of which the admissions committee should be aware, please explain them here (e.g. unexplained gaps in work, choice of recommenders, inconsistent or questionable academic performance). Note that you should NOT upload additional essays nor additional recommendations in this area. The Optional Information section is intended to provide the admissions committee with insight into your circumstances only.

• The Duke MBA essay prompt is quite specific, and you should this optional essay solely to address any weaknesses in your applications. While the Admissions Committee permits responses of up to one page, it’s advisable that you should be concise and straightforward in your answers. Use this opportunity wisely; only provide additional information if you believe it is essential for Duke MBA to gain a complete and accurate picture of you as a candidate
• Duke MBA has set a maximum word count of 500 for this optional submission. This limit, along with clear guidance on what should be excluded, indicates that the Admissions Committee is not seeking extra information from those who worry that not submitting an optional essay might negatively impact their application. Instead, this essay should be reserved for candidates who genuinely need to clarify important aspects of their background

Duke Fuqua MBA mandates the submission of one letter of recommendation. The recommender is required to fill out the designated recommendation forms linked to the online application; any other format will not be accepted.

This recommendation should highlight the candidate’s performance in their latest professional environment. Additionally, recommendations can also stem from volunteer work or other service-related roles where the candidate has made significant contributions. The most impactful recommendations are those provided by individuals who are familiar with the candidate’s professional skills and capabilities.

Candidates can also provide additional endorsements from Duke MBA’s alumni or current students using this Endorsement Form. If the form is submitted before candidates submit their complete application, they will be eligible for an application fee waiver.

The recommender will be asked to answer the following questions:

• Please provide a brief description of your interaction with the applicant and, if applicable, the applicant’s role in your organization.
• How does the performance of the applicant compare to that of other well-qualified individuals in similar roles?
• Describe the most important piece of constructive feedback you have given the applicant. Please detail the circumstances and the applicant’s response.
• Is there anything else we should know? (Optional)

Interviews for the NYU Stern MBA programs are conducted solely by invitation and are facilitated by members of the Admissions Committee. The interviewers will thoroughly examine the candidate’s entire application prior to the interview, which allows them to ask personalised questions that reflect the applicant’s unique background and experiences.

While the interview process is personalized, it still adheres to the conventional structure of MBA interviews. Candidates can expect to discuss their short- and long-term career aspirations, articulate their professional goals, and explain their motivations for choosing NYU Stern and pursuing an MBA at this particular stage in their lives.
